The displayIcon macro doesn’t display icons from FontAwesome directly but instead displays icons from XWiki’s currently configured icon theme. I’ve explained the relation between icon themes and FontAwesome in a reply to another forum post.
The offline icon pack that is included in XWiki should contain the full free subset of the FontAwesome icon pack, but it is not the current version (we have a Jira issue about that).
