probably is for MariaDB 10 too

Just checked on Setting Character Sets and Collations - MariaDB Knowledge Base

In MariaDB, the default character set is latin1, and the default collation is latin1_swedish_ci

However for Debian Differences in MariaDB in Debian (and Ubuntu) - MariaDB Knowledge Base it’s utf8mb4 and utf8mb4_general_ci.

That’s probably because you end up with MariaDB when you ask for MySQL in recent Debian based systems.
