Stop using Google Analytics on XWiki.org

I see that we’re currently still using both GA and Matomo on xwiki.org. It would be good to progress on decommissioning GA.

Some questions:

  1. @gabrielc have you been able to import old GA data into the matomo instance so that we can have historical data and compare the evolution of xwiki.org traffic over time?
  2. Is the matomo recording working fine after several months of using it? I don’t have credentials to access it ATM. Since you set it up and configured it, maybe you could give us some analysis of the past months since you set it up, showing some graphs?

Even if 1) cannot be achieved, maybe we could do an export of GA data and archive it (just in case we need it in the future), and then remove GA?

WDYT?

Thx

@gabrielc could you tell us if https://www.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Main/LegalNotice/ needs to be updated for Matomo?

Thx

Helloo!! :waving_hand:

Not yet. I asked for some help on this issue. Even so, this shouldn’t be a blocker for removing the GA tracking script from XWiki.org. The data that’s currently in GA, will remain in GA (unless explicitly deleted). It’s just that new data won’t appear in GA anymore. But we already track new data with Matomo, and we have a couple of months of overlap between GA & Matomo, so it’s not like we’d lose any data.

Yep. Everything seems to be working fine. No issues as far as I can see.

Apologies about that. I think I did send you an account creation link at some point, but they expire in 7 days (if I remember correctly). I’ll send you another one.

Sure! In Matomo we have data from 2025-09-08 until today (2026-01-28, not full day). Here are some statistics from Matomo:

Country % of traffic Visits
China 29.1% 85,701
United States 19.6% 57,725
Germany 11.6% 34,267
India 3.9% 11,503
Russia 3.2% 9,467
France 3.2% 9,356
Vietnam 2.5% 7,308
Romania 1.7% 4,892
Brazil 1.6% 4,630
Canada 1.5% 4,309

I was a bit surprised that China is the region with the most visitors. I checked the visitor logs, and it seems to be mostly bots. They’re using either Windows 10 or Mac 10.x and Headless Chrome. They directly enter on a random page, refresh it, and then leave. A bunch of them from different regions (proxies?) visit XWiki.org at the same time, and then vanish. Maybe data collection for AI training?

If you’d like, I could schedule some weekly email reports as well. Just let me know what email(s) the report should be sent to.

Not a lawyer so I can’t tell you for sure, but under the “Cookies” section maybe you could add the fact that the website uses cookies from a Matomo instance operated by XWiki SAS to track visitors?

I agree.

Thx for the stats!

I’ve now removed GA from xwiki.org and updated https://www.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Main/LegalNotice/?viewer=changes&rev1=8.1&rev2=9.1&

Thanks

Hello!

Data import has been completed. Due to a Matomo technicality it is not imported over the same website, but in a new website entry named “XWiki Community GA Archive”. Data imported from GA is from the following date range 2023-05-28 - 2026-01-31.

I checked, and you seem to have an admin account that was last accessed 182 days ago. You can try to reset your password in the bottom right section of the login screen (“Lost your password?” link). You’ll need to use the username: vmassol.
If that doesn’t work, please get in touch with me and I’ll manually reset your password.
