Annotation look update

Heyy guys! :star_struck:
I’m here to talk about some improvements related to an annotation’s look.

Current look of annotations

Comparison with current comments

Issues

  • An annotation’s space usage can be optimized,
  • its look can be updated to look more modern,
  • the shadow color uses the link color, which seems incorrect
  • the profile picture occupies a bit too much space
  • its look is not cohesive with the comments

Improvement

We simplify the look of an annotation.
The comment will be updated to be cohesive with the new look.

#1 The profile picture is much smaller, focusing the attention on the text.

#2 We keep the date & time on the same line with the name of the user.

#3 We add a “x” icon to close the annotation in a easier way. Currently, the user has to click the annotation icon to close the annotation. Even if we go with this proposal, some users may not understand the idea of clicking on the annotation to close it.

#4 We add a “Mark as solved” button that when clicked turns an annotation into a simple comment.

“Mark as solved” is a common functionality in many popular software like Google Docs & Notion. Google Docs takes away the highlighting and checks the comment, literally marking it as solved. In Notion, when clicking the check icon, the annotation is completely deleted.

What do you think?

Note: the look of normal comments and comments with quotes/annotations will be tackled separately.

Same comment as on Comments look update

The only different I see between the two (aside from the fact that there is no point repeating the quoted text in the annotation view) is the fact that “View thread” does not have a number in the annotation view, but it’s not clear to me why.

It’s a good idea. Note that we don’t have this kind of metadata right now (unless I missed it) so it goes a bit beyond look update.

Is this a good place to ask to not have annotations in comments like regular comments? I find them a bit unreadable - at least on 15.10.x

Ok, I need to read threads more carefully

Not sure about this, because to me comments are something relative to the whole page; annotations are relative to specific portions of the page.

But:

Fine, then.

For me, the “mark as solved” feature (which doesn’t currently exist) should be for both comments and annotations and clicking it should hide the comment or annotation (with an option somewhere to delete hidden comments/annotations).
