Can the "Main content body" be divided into 2 columns?

Hi we want to turn this main body into 2 columns like this.
We don’t want to use panels because the panels auto-hide and it doesn’t suit us.

Has anyone else attempted this? Sorry I know this is a big round question but I don’t know too much web programming or CSS and have to ask at this high level.
