If it is centered though, I think the extra space on the sides would allow us to show annotations/comments inline with the text they’re referencing (which is something some of our users have asked for). It could also double as a kind of “zen mode” on larger displays.

You might want to take a look at another discussion Document Information Tabs . This is something we are considering too.

If we want to allow customization of this option, we could do something similar to what Wikipedia is currently doing, and offer a “Standard” and a “Wide” option for people to chose from.

Yes, that’s the idea. You can check Notion too, which have something similar.
