Drop support for Tomcat 10.0 in XWiki 19.0.0

Hi everyone,

Tomcat 10.0 and 10.1 actually target two different JakartaEE versions (9 and 10), making them a lot more different than their versions suggest (I suspect they did that to, finally, make Tomcat versions in sync with Jakarta EE versions). Since Tomcat 11 in a thing, we are not really supposed to support Tomcat 10.0 anymore (and https://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Community/SupportStrategy/ServletContainerSupportStrategy/ already suggest we don’t).

But Tomcat is a pretty critical piece for the XWiki ecosystem, and it always has various consequences in terms of supported setups (which is why I propose to do it only in XWiki 19.0.0).

So here is my why I would like to do it:

  • As you probably guessed by now, I would like to move to Jakarta EE 10. That means moving to Servlet 6, WebSocket 2.1.1 and Jakarta EL 5.
  • I should also have put there something suggesting that we need that to be able to upgrade to Hibernate Validator 8, but turns out I already did it by mistake (I thought it required Jakarta EE 9). Luckily it seems to work fine (apparently it only uses APIs which already exist in Tomcat 10.0, even if it’s build with Jakarta EL 5 which is only provided by Tomcat 10.1). Still it would be nice to fix this discrepancy before upgrading to a Hibernate Validator 8.x version which break.

and why I think it’s OK to do it:

  • Tomcat 10.0 is EOL.
  • In all the Debian (and Debian-based) distributions which have a tomcat10 package, you now end up with Tomcat 10.1.

WDYT ?

Here is my +1
