Installation using Debian/Ubuntu (.DEB) packages: getting confused

Hi! I’ve just got a new server running Ubuntu 24.04. I will install XWiki on it. Furthermore, I installed several useful tools I like to have available in a new OS installation. No application server or relational database engine are installed by default.

Then, I reach the Installation using Debian/Ubuntu (.DEB) packages. It was updated yesterday! Cool! But I got confused again by the warning in the first section:

Please, why I must mind about Debian decision about removing Tomcat 9 if I’m going to install my first and fresh XWiki instance?

I would move that warning lower in the page and promote the section Complete Installation just below sudo apt-get update code box in APT Configuration.

IMO, details about what repos offer must go after the Complete Installation section, with some comments/instructions about installing separate packages. Following my brief experience, it is by no means easy to understand how to deal with partial installations.

WDYT? Thanks!

As indicated in the warning, it’s only if you are installing a pre 17 XWiki version, which means, until the end of the year, the XWiki LTS version (16.10.x), for example.

Thanks. Yes, I got that. But I think that a user installing XWiki for the first time, or even if she/he installed XWiki a lot of times like me, what want firstly is to have a state-of-the-art installation. Perhaps later he/she would mind about releases.

On a fresh Ubuntu/Debian installation, you didn’t get any application server or relational database installed by default. All what I expect up there would be the OS release requirements of the newest XWiki release. Then, later, how to proceed, if supported, if I want to stick with a previous OS version.

Just me two cents! As always, thanks for your help!
