Issue: Headings in 15.10 have changed

Hi,

we just update one of our Wikis to 15.10.
The size of the headings 1-6 (Überschriften 1 - 6) changed, so that the look of our sites is a mess now.
I did not check the other formats because we usually only work with the heading-formats.

Is there a way to bring the headings back to their old sizes?

In the screenshot you can see the sandboxes (left 15.10, right 15.5)

We figuered out, why the difference occured with our update

So we just checked over 1k pages in our two wikis and set the concerning headings to our size.

Next time we will spend more time to read the release notes

I don’t understand this part. What do you mean by “checked”?

Yes it was changed to be more visible. Is that a problem?

I’m asking because if there’s something to adjust on the XWiki side, we’d like to know.

Thanks!

I’d better used “reviewed”. We reviewed all the pages and had a look, where the new sizes of the headings doesn’t fit the appearance of the whole text. This took us one or two hours with two man, but was not as much as we suspected.

Thank you for your care.
As we changed the sizes individually, there is no need to change the Heading sizes in general.
We now will update our guidelines for the format of our pages to prevend this in the future.

The main use for our wikis in our company is to provide information to all employees and so a uniform look of the pages is needed.

My colleague (not registered in this forum) wrote this, maybe this will explain the thing better than me.

In the past, we liked to use heading 5 as the paragraph format for bulleted lists, as the font size was also 18 here, but the line spacing was smaller than with the standard formatting. After the release change, however, this means that all lines formatted in this way are now only displayed in the actual font size of approx. 14-16. This makes it necessary to review the entire wiki, as the original formatting is no longer present and everything looks a bit strange.

I fear to understand that you’re using headings in a wrong-semantic way  (ie used to benefit from their font size in bullet list items rather than for being headings). I hope it’s not the case! If it is, you would probably be better off using some CSS to get the size you need.

hmm this sounds not the best, and you’d benefit from using CSS to define the size you need rather than using headings (unless you really need headings so that your bullet list items appear in TOCs for example).

Thx for the info.

Hi!

Disregard what I’m saying hereafter if you used <h5> for semantic reasons. From what I can understand, it was for presentation.

Note that this use of the semantic element <h5> probably makes the content way more difficult to scan through for your disabled users (or any user of assistive technologies). What can be seen and what is showed by tools is quite different. Tools need to access and give information that are not written down, but seen by visual users, such as “that thing is a heading”.

Here is a demo of a screen reader: https://youtu.be/zmVyUrhRoU0?si=mrNUUBNRc2Okk2bx&t=123

XWiki syntax allows you to build some semantic HTML, I can only recommend you make use of it to build semantic HTML. Similarly to other web content, I recommend you to separate the style from the actual content. To do so, you can use a stylesheet extension for places where you need your own style

Thank you very much for your reply.

We also thought about using the headings in a wrong way.
I will discuss with my colleague and answer detailed later this week.

Have a nice day!
