Migration of the Matrix/Element rooms

Hi everyone,

As you might know, XWiki is using the Matrix protocol for its Chat rooms. We’re planning a migration of those rooms today, the 12th of August, at 3PM CEST. More explanations below.

Important vulnerabilities in the Matrix protocol led to a coordinated release to update the various clients and servers in the ecosystem. In this context, it’s very important that you make sure you are using the very last version of your Matrix client (or you won’t be able to access rooms anymore).

Part of those fixes also requires upgrading rooms, especially federated rooms like the #xwiki and #xwiki-security rooms. And in Matrix, upgrading a room means creating a new room and “locking” the old one. The new room is reusing the public name(s) of the old one, so it means it does not change anything for the documentation and links which are using the public name of the room (most links to a specific message use the unique name of the room, which won’t change, so those should not be broken either).

If you’re already inside the room to upgrade, you should receive directly a notification whenever the upgrade is done to inform you about the new room and access it directly.

The good news is also that the search is also looking at the old room. It’s just that if you go back in history you will hit a wall at some point, and will need to switch to the old (read-only) version of the room.

We are also adding more human-readable links to access the old rooms (#xwiki-old and #xwiki-security-old), in case you would like to access them directly.

We hope this migration will go as smoothly as possible.

Thanks.
