Project governance update: Remove the possibility to add a Product item in the xwiki.org top navigation

Context

While browsing through our doc, I ended up reading a bit of our Project Governance page:

We allow listing commercial offerings in various zones, where Sponsoring Companies can advertise their services/packages related to the XWiki project: On the download/hosted pages (for “business” packages, subscriptions, hosting, could offerings) or with a “Products” tab in some top level horizontal navigation to differentiate “Projects” (i.e. community) from “Products” (commercial offerings)

This was added to the doc in 2010, and I never heard of a Products tab in the horizontal navigation of xwiki.org . @vmassol helped me and found some discussions in the mailing list archives about the creation of this page:

I’m also not sure we want this now but I wanted to leave the door open for the
future. We could decide to remove it for now and rediscuss it later if the need
arises.

From what we can see in the second discussion, this idea of navigation tab was already not clearly approved back then. It was only kept in as something that could be used in the future.

Now a few years have passed, and it does not seem like anything will ever happen with this possibility of Product tab.
IMO if we want to keep this idea in our Project Governance it should at the very least be discussed again. I am against keeping this idea in the Project Governance.

Proposal

I propose to remove the latest assertion from the couple sentences above, which means replacing it with:

We allow listing commercial offerings in various zones, where Sponsoring Companies can advertise their services/packages related to the XWiki project: On the download/hosted pages (for “business” packages, subscriptions, hosting, could offerings).

Conclusion

There’s no need for it to be discussed again as it was voted back then, see Re: [xwiki-devs] [VOTE] XWiki.org governance (take 2) (RESULT)

But we can always vote to remove it if we don’t like it anymore or think it’s not useful.

+0 to remove it as we’ve not used it and we can always vote it back in if we need it one day.

Updated https://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Community/Governance with the changes proposed here since it seemed it didn’t pose an issue. I’m relying on lazy consensus. If a committer objects to this change, please ping me so that I know about it (and maybe we can find another solution) and feel free to revert https://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Community/Governance?viewer=changes&rev1=7.1&rev2=8.1& :slight_smile:

Why do you say this since it was a VOTE and we had 3 committers voting?

Two comments:

  1. I think the new quotes used are wrong :wink: At least the diff shows weird quotes in the replaced text
  2. Would be nice to fix the “could offerings” → “cloud offerings” :wink:

I’m not a committer :slight_smile: We got a +0 from you and Marius. I doubt any committer would oppose to this change though.
I try to give my opinion on questions that are aimed to committers, but it’s mostly a suggestion and it doesn’t hold any decision power in a VOTE.
