I had no idea of this shortcut, that’s neat. But the idea still stands, for me, the main use for the link dialog is for novice users, that are not very familiar with these advanced shortcuts. That’s also why I’ve included the link type as tabs, it’s easy to recognize each different type.

ok, I get your point about users not being comfortable with shortcuts.
I guess we will need to find a tradeoff to make the UI usable both for advanced users wanting to go fast and also for less advanced user that will expect guidance and clarity in the UI.

Now, if we could auto select the correct type based on what the user typed, even better. In this case we could still use the compact version as the standard, with a few adjustments, like @amilica and @vmassol pointed out.

Wouldn’t it make it even harder to use? Like what would you show in the auto-suggest when the user types wik in the field?

I forgot to atttach the image, but you can check my original comment up above (also linked below). But in short, if the performance is ok, we can make an auto suggest with categories.

I like that, but what if we could make this more automatic, based on what the user types in the box. And make the “type” the first button on the input group. For example:
