Remove IRC from our supported channels?

Hi devs,

It seems our bridge from IRC to Matrix got broken some time ago.

I’d like to take that opportunity to decide that we don’t want to support IRC as a proper channel for XWiki and that we’re ok to say that we only support Matrix.

If we agree, I’ll modify https://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Community/Chat accordingly + update the diagram at https://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Community/DevelopmentPractices#HGeneralDevelopmentFlow

Rationale:

  • More work to support 2 chat channels
  • It’s been broken a while ago and we got nobody complaining and I doubt anyone really cares or uses IRC much anymore for XWiki

Do we have any insights if there is any activity in the IRC channel? If there is no activity, it might make sense to try to actually close the channel/make it clear in the topic of the channel that it isn’t used anymore.

No insight because we’ve stopped logging the XWiki IRC chat a long time ago. See https://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Community/Chat where we say:

The #xwiki IRC chat channel used to be logged before we moved to Matrix (it’s now not logged anymore):
