is it possible to upgrade such old version of XWiki or must we make new install?

Wow, version 2.2, that’s really old! 
Dates back from March 2010. You could upgrade but you’d need to read the release notes from all versions after 2.2 to verify for any specific upgrade instructions. That’s hard work.
So the best option IMO is to export the wiki pages with your own content as a XAR, setup a new XWiki instance and import it in that instance (see http://platform.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/AdminGuide/ImportExport).
One last option: if you wish someone else to perform the upgrade for you, you could consider asking one of the companies participating to the development of XWiki to do it for you. See https://www.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Main/Supporters/SponsoringCompanies/

Thank you for your answers. We were thinking to set-up new installation and export/import is an option. We didn’t know it exists. We will see how it goes and I will leave our feedback in next weeks (holidays
