Xwiki as mixed frontend for rest?

i came accross xwiki via
OW2 Projects - XWiki (xwiki.WebHome) ,
reading that description and looking around:

i wonder if the following is possible?

Given an existing REST interface, could you u use xwiki as a CRUD-frontend for this REST interface. The REST interface is independent, not part xwiki itself?

If this would be possible, what about authentication (for the REST interface)
