Hello,
Context: While working on the proposal about where to list all macros, UIXPs, etc and missing XClasses in the DocApp, I came across this page: Macros and discovered it comes from the Help Application.
The Help page still sends users to the old Documentation space. For example, clicking on any “Learn more” button takes you to the old docs, most of the links link now lead to a “This content has moved” page or a redirect.
As found in the code, the Help Application links are hardcoded in the Help pages, for example here: (xwiki-platform/xwiki-platform-core/xwiki-platform-help/xwiki-platform-help-ui/src/main/resources/Help/Templates/WebHome.xml at master · elenicojocariu/xwiki-platform · GitHub).
The Help App is not a special case. Anyone who saved a URL to an old documentation page, or any other place that use the URL instead of page reference, has the same problem of arriving on empty pages with links. A redirect to a single page doesn’t work well either, because one old page is now usually split into several new pages, so the redirect can’t know which one the reader needs.
However, I think the Help Application should be updated to ship direct links to the new content, so it is actually useful for users and up to date.
Proposal
I can start updating the links myself. Right now, it is possible that some of them point to pages that are not converted to the new documentation yet, but we are close to having all the targets. So I suggest we only release the updated app once all the links are up to date.
Pages in the Help Application
I’d keep these pages as they are, because I find them very useful, and only update their links:
Question: what do we do with the Videos page?
Videos :The videos are old and don’t bring much value anymore. In the first one, for example, the UI has changed so much that you can’t really follow it. So I propose we drop the Videos page and stop pointing to it from the Help Application.
What do you think? Any other ideas?
Thanks!
